Welcome to El Macero Pharmacy, an integrative, European-style pharmacy! Our focus is on your wellness. We combine traditional western medicine with alternative and complementary medicine, evaluating not just your ailment but your overall health. We like the idea of taking proactive measures in preventing illness and maintaining an optimal level of health, and recommend using our private line of European standard herbal products. We have an herbalist on staff to help patients make informed decisions on which herbal supplements to take and which to avoid taking with their prescription medications. Consultations with our herbalist are available if you have questions regarding herbal supplements for specific health concerns. And because your skin is an expression of your overall wellness and health, we also have an esthetician as part of our staff (and a beautiful little treatment room too!) Our esthetician and herbalist work together on any skin problems addressing them from a cosmetic, topical and herbal perspective. If we don’t already know you, please come by for a visit…we welcome the chance to get to know and serve you!
Michele's BIO
Hello, my name is Michele Defty. I am the herbalist at El Macero Pharmacy. While growing up in Davis, I spent much time with family in Europe (mainly the Netherlands and Germany), where medicinal plants have been used for centuries. Cultivating and using plants, both for cooking and for medicinal/cosmetic purposes has always been a part of my life, so it was only a matter of time before I began seeking more advanced training in the art and science of herbalism. I have had the pleasure and great fortune of studying under many incredible teachers. In addition to a B.A. from UC Davis (International Relations, German), my herbal training consists of a 1 ½ year apprenticeship with Christopher Hobbs, L.Ac., AHG, and a one year intensive training course with Kami McBride. I have also completed a course of study under the guidance of Rosemary Gladstar. Numerous other master herbalists have shared their knowledge at conferences and herbal gatherings that I have attended. As Rosemary Gladstar has said, “There are many roads that lead to being a good herbalist and many ways to define the art of herbalism. But truth be told, herbalism is as ancient as the Earth, as old as the first people.” I feel honored to be able to pass on some of this wisdom, and I look forward to seeing you at the pharmacy!
